University-Station Peer Review Assessment Tool
This session will present a review process for public broadcasters that would be familiar to university administrators, who are accustomed to outside reviews of their academic programs.  The result of this session could be greater licensee buy-in to a station’s future plans.

Employers’ Legal Obligations to Employees in the Military
This session is intended to bring to the attention of employers the legal obligations they have to employees who have been called to active military duty and what happens when they return.  Employers usually try to treat returning veterans fairly but lack clear guidance and understanding of USERRA which covers all persons entitled to military leaves of absence their rights and benefits.

For example, what obligations, if any, does an employer have to re-employ a veteran in the position they held before being called to active duty?  What if in doing so displaces another employee or results in hardship to the employer?  What happens when a veteran returns to work with a disability?

This is the time for all employers to show their gratitude for those who have chosen to serve their country in these difficult times.  They must support and address the needs of those who have already returned, as well as those who will return from duty by providing employment and proactively addressing the impact upon their businesses.

New Opportunities for Revenue:  Following the research
What would it take for public broadcasters to take advantage of new media as a source of significant new revenue?  To begin with, what would those revenue streams be?  And then, what key indicators would give us insight into our potential to cultivate these sources?

In this session, we will identify the key elements that would allow stations to capitalize on two income opportunities—the ones we have used to build our broadcast system—namely, memberships and corporate support.

The key indicators we will look at are the ones that are highly correlated with success in growing these revenue streams: for membership, frequency of use and a sense of personal importance; and for corporate support, the volume of impressions and sales capability.

Producer:          Esperanza Flury, WXPN, Philadelphia, PA
Presenter:         Mark Fuerst, IMA,
Rhinebeck, NY

Learning Objectives:

  • Providing CFOs and station financial planners with a basic grounding in new media metrics: Which measurements are currently viewed as key performance indicators?  How is the information collected?
  • Provide CFOs and other station financial planners with actual comparative performance data that can be used to assess current local station progress in establishing a new media franchise.

Ready for Launch:  Three New Media Technologies That are Ready to Produce New Revenue for Station/Program Sites and Program Producers
Over the last year, at least three major projects have emerged within the broad “public media” world that show some signs of providing significant new revenue—revenue beyond memberships and local underwriting.
These projects are:

1. ReelChanges.org and Spot.us: These two sites use a “pre-production” “crowd source” fund raising strategy, in which producers can offer ideas for development—from investigative reports and news stories to documentary films.  The sites are up and running and starting to gain some attention.

2. Kachingle: Developed by a group of Silicon Valley bright lights, this system allows individuals to “reward” websites or blogs through a sophisticated “tip jar” system that is based, in part, on public radio’s voluntary memberships.

3. The National Public Media Remnant Ad Network: This project, developed by the staff of NPM and backed by IMA, DEI and PBS Development, could provide thousands of dollars in passive income to individual stations or programs that contribute visitors and page views to a national network sites.

Producer:          Esperanza Flury, WXPN, Philadelphia, PA
Presenters:       Mark Fuerst, IMA,
Rhinebeck, NY; Hal Plotkin, ReelChanges.org, Palo Alto, CA; and
                        Cynthia Typaldos, Kachingle, Saratoga, CA

Learning Objectives:

  • Introduce CFOs and other station managers to innovative, new media-based fundraising technologies that have moved well beyond the planning stages.
  • Help station personnel identify ways that these techniques could be applied at individual stations, depending on the size of station and content format.
